Yard Work Calories

Do you like to garden?   Do you grow tomatoes or herbs outside?

If you have the space, and like to plant flowers, do light
landscaping, or pull weeds in your vegetable garden,
then you can burn off extra calories.

It doesn't take much to spend an hour or two in
the garden staking up beans or pulling the weeds
away from your pepper plants.

It is also really nice to be out-of-doors at this time
of the year as the weather is still cool and the
bugs (especially the mosquitoes) are at a minimum.

If you spend two hours of light yard work such as
gardening, mowing the lawn, or planting some
new flowers, you can burn off about 330 calories.

Nice! Especially for something that you really
enjoy doing.   Have fun and keep "Burning" -
those calories, that is.

Workout Weather

The weather is GREAT this time of year.

I am just loving this weather.   It is getting warmer,
not too many insects out yet, and the sun is shining
and it is getting nice and warm.
This is wonderful weather to do things out of doors.

I have been repairing and setting out the garden.
I have also been mowing.  I like to mow with a push
mower as it gives me more exercise (almost 3 acres)
pushing up and down hills.

I also like to get outside and run.  Enjoying the
sunshine and warm weather sure beats being
inside on a treadmill for walking or running.

Get outside, get a little sun.  It's good for you.

ENJOY!

Til' next time -

Overweight Children

I was walking through the grocery store the other day and, once again,
I saw a 15-20 kids with their parents out shopping. At least 5 of these
kids were very, very overweight. I would really call them obese.
These are young children who are only 5 or 6 years old.   A couple
more that were under 12.  The CDC (Center for Disease Control)
states that 1 of 7 children ages 6 - 11 are not just
overweight, but obese. There is some correlation to income, but
it is small.

Every time that I see a very young child who is very overweight, all
that I always wonder WHY? How can any parent let their child
gain that much weight? I then look at the parents and, in most cases,
one of both of the parents are also extremely overweight. The parents
do not realize that they are setting an example, and not one that the
child should be imitating.

If the parent is asked about their child's weight, I am sure that
most parents will shake their head and say "I just don't know what
to do!" I know what they can do.  I taught gymnastics and had
one very overweight young 5 year old.  She was unable to just
hang from a bar.  The I overheard the father tell her that as a
reward for trying hard he would get her an ice cream cone
when her class was over.  I set him straight very quickly.
Amazingly, he really thought he was doing the right thing.

When I am asked what to do, harsh as this may sound, I
sometimes simply tell them to MAKE AN EFFORT, and use some
common sense.  Let your child know that your being overweight is not
how he or she should be, and that just because you eat an
entire bag of potato chips at a sitting, that it in not okay for your child.

I could go on for a while, but I would really like to hear some other
thoughts on this. I am not blaming, but more just wondering
why parents do not take more of an interest.

Until next time, go for a walk - and take your children.

If you have a weight problem, let me give you some free
information that will really help you. If you look at the

your name and email. Fill it in and I guarantee that
you will not be disappointed.

Stretch OUT Those Calories

We have all heard that we should do some
stretching before we run or do other heavy
types of exercise.  Stretching is important
for those reasons and more.

When you stretch you also help to align
your spine, reduce stress on your
joints, increase blood flow, and you also
burn off calories

You can burn over 200 calories through
stretching if you stretch for an hour.

Most people would not know where to
begin, but Yoga is a great example of
stretching that can not only reduce stress,
but there are so many types of stretches
offered that you can stay busy for hours
trying to incorporate and learn all of
the various stretches.

As a former gymnast, I have many stretching
exercises at my disposal.  Yoga is really a
great extension to what I already use.
Try stretching out, you just might get "Hooked".

Getting Ready for Summer?

Summer is almost here.  Are you getting your body ready?  Now is the
time to begin getting rid of those pounds (If you have not already started).

Since summer brings with it warm weather and thoughts of
being out-of-doors, it only stands to reason that outside is
where you should start spending some time.

Start going on walks.  That will burn away some calories.
Don't hire someone to mow your yard - do it yourself.
Mowing is great exercise.  I mow my yard and do not
use the self-propel feature.  I get more exercise just
pushing.  I mow over 2 acres with a push mower.

Now, if you have a dog, get out there with a frisbee
or a ball and do some serious playing with your
friend.  Your dog will love you all the more for it.

As always, watch out for what you eat.
