We are now well into the year and many have resolved that this is the year that they
will lose that weight that they have been looking at all of these years. But - how many
of us have already given up?
We know that losing weight is not easy, but it does not have to be excruciating either.
As a Personal Trainer and Mental Training Coach, I constantly battle with the misconception
that "I just can't lose weight, no matter what I do!" feelings. While it is true that many people DO have an easy time losing weight, it is NEVER impossible. Bottom line is that if I am overweight, Then I need to move more (exercise), and eat less.
Weight loss, like any other worthwhile endeavor, take time if you are going to do it right.
You don't learn how to play a piano in a few weeks. Likewise, losing weight takes learning
how to eat correctly (for your body and physiology), and making correct eating a part of you.
Some people just naturally are able to lose weight more easily than others, just as some
individuals find themselves playing songs on the piano after only a few months.
Just as learning is different, so does the physiology of our bodies differ from person to
person. If I walk for an hour, I might burn off 100 calories, while someone else might
walk the same route, for the same amount of time, and burn off 120 calories. That's life!
Everyone want the "Quick Fix" and easy weight loss. Here is my answer: The quicker that
you get off your butt and start moving more and eating less, the sooner you will begin
seeing yourself lose weight. Easy? NO! Doable? Of course.

Lose Easy Weight
I can't help but chuckle when I hear people tell me that they "Just can't lose any weight!"
First, losing weight is not "Instant" happening. It is, instead, a process that take time.
There are some short cuts that a person can do to begin to see results more quickly.
Here are a couple of those short cuts:
1. Pay attention to what you eat - EVERYTHING!
Remember that cookie that you grabbed on the run? How about that handful of
chips that you just couldn't pass up as you were going through the cabinet?
Didn't you grab a glass of juice with lunch? Juice is good, but it does have calories.
2. Speed up your metabolism. YEAH, RIGHT! So how do I go about doing that "Smarty"?
What you are trying to do is to make your body more efficient. Some people just
naturally (those lucky dogs) have a more efficient physiology that others. Most of us must
actually work at getting our bodies to cooperate.
To get your body to be more efficient, you need to make your muscles do more work.
When your muscles work more, they burn off more calories. So, getting your muscles
toned up and stronger is one of the keys to burning off more calories more quickly.
In a nutshell, pay close attention to what you eat each day (NO CHEATING! You only hurt
yourself in the long run). Cut out those small snacks, and drink more water. You can cut up
to 500 calories a day simply by paying attention. Next, you need to get more active. Don't
avoid stairs. Don't send your kids to do things that you can do. Walk a lot.
If you can cut out only 300 calories a day in snacks and drinks, and if you get enough exercise
so that you burn off 300 calories a day, that is a 600 calorie deficit without even trying hard.
In ten (10) days, you will have lost 2 pounds. Now, if you actually work at a diet, and do a
bit more serious exercise - WOW!
That's all I have for now.

Are You Orthorexic?
One of the newest "Psych" disorders is called Orthorexia Nervosa.
This is an eating disorder characterized by the "Obsession" with
eating healthy foods. If you want to eat foods without msg, chemical
additives, or foods that are natural, then you are probably suffering
from Orthorexia.
This is actually not that new. This was a condition that was born
in 1997 by a California (Go figure) psychiatrist Dr. Steven Bratman.
As Dr. Bratman states, it is characterized by "a fixation on righteous
eating".
I guess I am not sure how to react or respond to this silliness.
If going out of one's way to make sure they stay healthy is
a mental disease, then I am REALLY NUTS! I also go out of
my way to exercise on a regular basis. I wonder what the
good doctor's diagnosis of that might be?
I would really like to hear a comment or two from someone
as to how you might feel about this.
To your health,

Sleep Yourself Thin!
There have been studies that have shown a link between
getting enough sleep and losing weight.
If you are not getting enough sleep (7-8 hours), and you
are trying to shed pounds without success, then you may
want to try getting a little more sleep.
Those individuals with more sleep had more of a hormone
called "Leptin" which helps to regulate hunger. While just
sleeping is not going to actually put you at your ideal weight,
keeping up with your healthy routine AND getting a good
night's rest, may certainly help to keep your body regulated
and help in your weight loss efforts.
Bob
P.S. There is also a MENTAL side to losing weight.

Kids & Pets
Just an update on your pet's health.
In spite of all of the news about pets (and young children) being
left in cars during the summer months, I am still hearing a lot of
news about people still leaving their pets (and kids) in the car
while the parent(s) go in for "Just a minute".
Even with the windows rolled down a couple of inches, it can
still reach 120 degrees (or hotter) inside of a car.
If you are not willing to take your pet or child with you
when you get out of the car, then either leave them at
home, or don't go in to shop (or whatever). Okay, I'm done!
Have a safe summer.

Summer Ready?
It is now warm (hot in many places) and the sun is out
helping everyone's gardens.
Now is the time to take advantage of being able to walk
and enjoy the out-of-doors. Lots of calories to burn to help
you get into swimsuit shape.
Walk your dog instead of just letting it run outside.
do some gardening. Pull some weeds. My favorite-MOW!
Just make sure that you have the sun block and such if
you need it.
Well, you get the idea. Now is the time to help yourself get
into shape and feel better. Summer is ready. how about you?

More nuts
In my last blog I mentioned that eating nuts can
lower cholesterol.
What I failed to mention is that nuts are quite high
in fat content, so you do not want to eat too many.
Nuts are a great source of protein and are a very
healthy food - in moderation. So, make sure that
you keep your diet balanced with fruits and veggies.
Now is a great time of year to eat them. Local
markets usually have locally grown produce which
tends to be superior in flavor and nutrition to
that bought at your local supermarket.
You might also find a wider variety of things
from which to choose.
Good eating and good health
