Kids & Pets

Just an update on your pet's health.

In spite of all of the news about pets (and young children) being
left in cars during the summer months, I am still hearing a lot of
news about people still leaving their pets (and kids) in the car
while the parent(s) go in for "Just a minute".

Even with the windows rolled down a couple of inches, it can
still reach 120 degrees (or hotter) inside of a car.
If you are not willing to take your pet or child with you
when you get out of the car, then either leave them at
home, or don't go in to shop (or whatever).  Okay, I'm done!

Have a safe summer.

Summer Ready?

It is now warm (hot in many places) and the sun is out
helping everyone's gardens.

Now is the time to take advantage of being able to walk
and enjoy the out-of-doors.  Lots of calories to burn to help
you get into swimsuit shape.

Walk your dog instead of just letting it run outside.
do some gardening.  Pull some weeds.  My favorite-MOW!
Just make sure that you have the sun block and such if
 you need it.

Well, you get the idea.  Now is the time to help yourself get
into shape and feel better.  Summer is ready.  how about you?

More nuts

In my last blog I mentioned that eating nuts can
lower cholesterol.

What I failed to mention is that nuts are quite high
in fat content, so you do not want to eat too many.

Nuts are a great source of protein and are a very
healthy food - in moderation.  So, make sure that
you keep your diet balanced with fruits and veggies.

Now is a great time of year to eat them.  Local
markets usually have locally grown produce which
tends to be superior in flavor and nutrition to
that bought at your local supermarket.

You might also find a wider variety of things
from which to choose.

Good eating and good health

Nuts lower cholesterol

An interesting study from Loyola University study
has shown that eating small amount on nuts each day can lower
a person's cholesterol.

This was a review of 25 studies involving over 600 people.
The approximate daily amount was 67g (the equivalent of a
small bag of nuts).  The sudy showed that cholesterol reduction
was about 7.4% over anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks.

Not only did the nuts reduce cholesterol, but triglicerides
were also decreased.  Sounds like a winner.

So, the next time someone says "Nuts to you", just smile
and thank them.

"Nuts to you".

The time is NOW!

Don't delay.  NOW is the time to get yourself more healthy.

Science has not yet found any other healthy way for you
to lose weight and keep your health.  Sure, there are pills,
there is surgery, and there are a million and one diets out
there (some are actually good!), but it still boils down to
working a little harder, and having some self-discipline.

Following a healthier diet is not much more difficult than
eating a diet that is nutritionally bankrupt.  The major problem
is that for many people, giving up a few donuts, potato chips,
fatty meats, and the ever popular sodas (even the ones that
are supposedly 1 calorie, is out of the question.   More often
than not I hear "Oh, I just couldn't do that!"

All it takes to get healthier is to start eating more balanced meals,
pay a modicum of attention to what we eat, and get a moderate
amount of exercise.  It does take a little self-discipline, but living
a healthier lifestyle can be done and is not that hard to do.

The most common reason for failure at anything,
is that a person gives up.   Do not let giving up
be a part of YOUR plan.
