What does it take for a person to change their habits?
I have a friend who underwent major heart surgery a few
years ago. He vowed that he would quit smoking and begin
eating healthier. After getting out of the hospital the doctors
told him that he would be back if he did not change his ways.
He swore that he was going to stop smoking and begin eating
healthier. It is about two years later and he is back to
2 packs-a-day and frequents the fast-food places.
"It is just more convenient". I always ask him,
"How convenient are your cigarettes?"
In effect, this man's life is threatened and he is
unwilling to help himself. He really does not believe that
he will end up in the hospital (or dead) again. He feels too good.
We may want to lose weight, make extra money, or stop
procrastinating. Whatever it is that we want to do we
need to step up and actually do something. Getting ourselves
to actually move in some direction takes motivation. It is
important to find that motivation. Even more importantly,
unlike my friend, we need to KEEP that motivation!
How do we keep it? We need to stay focused.
Know what you want. Remember why you want it.
Keep constant reminders of your goals.

Motivation
Everyone is motivated by something. Whether you are
wanting to get good grades, make more money,
or lose weight, there is something that can spur you on.
There are two basic types of motivation. One is intrinsic.
Intrinsic is what come from within you. A natural desire
to do better, hunger, fear, feelings of self-worth, are all
examples of intrinsic motivation.
The other is extrinsic motivation. This is motivation from
the outside. Someone else being your cheerleader. Your
teacher or coach telling you that "you can do it".
Both have their place but, it is very important to learn how
to be self-motivated. What happens when your cheerleaders
are no longer there or available for you?
Look to yourself. Find what matter to YOU.

Past Weekend Fun
Well, hopefully, everyone has survived all of the eating and drinking that usually comes with
holiday fun. I sincerely hope that those who are watching their weight were able to keep things
in check. If you didn't, there is no need to "beat yourself up". You now have a new start.
Remember, each day that you wake up is a new start. It is important to appreciate this fact.

DON'T LOOK NOW!
Just a quick tip for those of you that are trying to lose weight and are dieting.
With the holiday just ahead, it is going to be a challenge to keep our eating
in check. Just remember, we really do not need all of the extra cakes, sodas, and
things that are "hollow" in nutrition.
One thing that you don't want to do is to keep looking at your scale every day.
Some think that this will help be a motivator, but I find that is not the case.
Remember the old saying "A watched pot never boils", well, neither does
reading a scale every day help your weight to fall off.
Smile, and keep your mouth closed when you are around the junk foods.

In Your Face!

Well, it is almost Memorial Day and there will be food, drinks, more food, snacks,
more food, and so on. Since the food is there, and is not likely to go away anytime
soon, if you are trying to watch your weight, you may want to remember that you
can always go back. It is okay that you only eat small portions at a time that just
make you comfortable, and not stuffed. Eating too much causes a multitude
of problems.
One of the immediate difficulties is heartburn. If you go out to eat and there is
more on your plate than you want (and there usually should be), it is perfectly okay
to get the rest of your meal "to go". I know that there are some of you that might
not think it appropriate to get a "doggie" bag when you are out to eat, especially
if you are at an expensive restaurant. I think that if you are eating an expensive
meal that it is all the more reason to take it with you. If you don't agree,
that's okay. I won't tell you to "get over it", at least not yet.
So, I wish everyone a great holiday. Just be mindful of what goes "In Your Face!"

called "water pills". You will lose water weight, not "fat" weight.
The only way to actually lose weight is to reduce the number of calories that

Some methods are better than others. Weight loss is one of those things
that can be done really effectively, or it can actually do more harm than good.
When we go on some form of weight loss program, it is important to
understand that, in addition to water, if we are not eating and drinking
the right things, then we can lose muscle instead of the fat. The correct
kinds of proteins must be put into our body so that we keep our
muscle mass intact.

Weight Loss Walking
Walking Tips
One thing that I do when I go out walking is to try to make
it more interesting by walking in different places, or in
different directions. Sometimes I try to walk in a direction
that is out of the way. It only usually gives me more exercise.
Most of us know the terrain and where we can comfortably
and safely walk. It is always nice to try out and see new things.
So next time you go walking, simply step out of the door
and pick a direction. Make walking more enjoyable and fun.
